Spectaculu – School Of Art And Technology
Spectaculu school is a non-profit school that has been operating from the Port Quays district of Rio de Janeiro since 1999. The organisation offers professional training in the areas of entertainment, art, technology and creative industry for young people aged 17 to 21 from the state school system and residents of socially vulnerable regions of Greater Rio.
It looks to unlock the doors leading to knowledge and offer a real possibility of employability, the school’s mission is the insertion of these young people into the world of entertainment, whose labour market is very short of skilled labour.
Spectaculu’s young students receive ten months of intensive technical training, with classes five times a week, and offers courses in Stage Props, Beauty, Stage Management & Dressing Room, Sewing and Costume Design, Photography, Set Lighting, Set Construction, Sound and Image Treatment. Through an educational vision that strives to stimulate the development of critical awareness, the school also provides students with ongoing education in philosophy, citizenship and rights, body language, oral and written communication, creativity, art history and music.
Founded by the set designer Gringo Cardia and the actress Marisa Orth, Spectaculu has the support of the artistic community and has two important contributors in the running of its activities: the artist Vik Muniz and the art and fashion projects consultant Malu Barretto.
